Monomyth

“Drawing inspiration from the timeless concept of the Monomyth, as explored by renowned scholars like Maria Tatar and Joseph Campbell, this production will encourage introspection, as you find echoes of your own life and experiences in the patterns of movement and the poetry of the human spirit. [Monomyth] weaves a tapestry of movement, music, and storytelling, seamlessly blending mythology and folklore with the raw, emotive power of dance” (Shelby Taylor, program note).

“Monomyth” was an immersive work put on by FLEET Co-Op in Nov 2023 held at Church & State in downtown Salt Lake City. With choreography by Sawyer Player and FLEET members, each character traveled on their own hero’s journey throughout the former church, their stories overlapping with one another. Multiple sets defined the space with seating set up in a ring for the center stage. A dynamic score rang through the dim chapel with lights illuminating each of the sets. Themes of autonomy, femininity, and perseverance were explored along with the concept of there being two sides to every story.

This show was a great push for me in learning more on the logistical side of a show. I met with Church & State about donating their space to FLEET, created a budget for the show and for FLEET for the year, co-organized and facilitated a fundraiser workshop, created and distributed advertising materials, contributed to the set design and score, developed a character and script, and helped provide feedback for other performers in their tracks. All of this was in addition to learning group material from Sawyer, creating my individual movement scores, and costuming myself. This push made the process the most rewarding one I’ve been apart of yet and I’m grateful for the amazing turnout and feedback received by our audiences. I’m excited for FLEET’s next project!
